Why Malta Matters
- The island of the Republic of Malta is located in the central Mediterranean Sea between Europe and Africa. Malta is a member State of the European Union and ratified CETA in 2017.
- Tourism constitutes 27.1% of the GDP in Malta, representing the main economic source for the countryFootnote 1.
- Canada-Malta bilateral merchandise trade totalled C$697 million in 2021: Canadian exports to Malta totalled C$659 million, while imports from Malta to Canada amounted to C$ 37.7 millionFootnote 2.
- Top exports from Canada to Malta include aircrafts (C$646.2 million, 92.6% of total Canadian exports to Malta), pharmaceutical products (totalling $4.8 million), optical and photographic products (totalling 3.3 million) and, electrical machinery (totalling $1.4 million including turbojets, turbopropellers and parts). While Canada’s top imports from Malta are electrical machinery (C$16 million), pharmaceutical products (C$7.06 million), toys, games and sport equipment ($2.5 million)Footnote 3.
