Canadian semiconductor technology research and development partnering delegation to South Korea
Request for expression of interest
Delegation dates: October 22 to 25, 2024
Global Affairs Canada (GAC), through the Embassy of Canada to Korea and in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) invites you to apply to participate in the Canadian semiconductor technology research and development (R&D) partnering delegation to South Korea under the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP).
The Partnership Development Activity (PDA) will take place in-person from October 22 to 25, 2024, in South Korea.
Please note that interested companies must apply no later than June 14, 2024.
Note: This delegation is being planned as an in-person event which will require travel to South Korea. Travel, however, must be consistent with both South Korea and Canada's international travel advice and advisories. If these advisories recommend against travel to South Korea at the time of the delegation, it may take place virtually. This means that all B2B meetings and speaking opportunities would be held virtually and some elements of the program may have to be cancelled. In addition, any funding approved for participant travel to the delegation would be withdrawn.
Delegation objective
The delegation objective is to foster partnerships between Canadian and Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research institutions, and large corporations for the purposes of research and development (R&D) collaboration.
The delegation will focus on the following areas:
- Advanced Material Research to improve device performance, energy efficiency and reliability
- Advanced Packaging including miniaturization of semiconductor devices
- Automation and Robotics
- Device Design and Modeling
- Integrated Circuit (IC) Design
- Process Technology to advance semiconductor manufacturing processes
- Novel solutions that can be used by Chip Manufacturers, Foundries, Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturers, Display Manufacturers, Solar Cell Manufacturers, Component Distributors, etc.
Examples of R&D collaboration include, but are not limited to the following:
- validation of the suitability of Canadian technology to the Korean market
- adaptation of Canadian technology to meet Korean and/or other market characteristics
- joint development of new products and/or services by combining Canadian and Korean technologies
Canadian delegation profile
The business delegation will consist of 8 to 10 Canadian SMEs offering technologies of relevance to semiconductor production, with compound semiconductors as a key focus.
Canadian applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Profit-oriented, SME incorporated in Canada
- Previous experience in commercializing technology for domestic and/or international markets
- Capacity and interest to co-develop technology with Korean partners
- Committed to expanding activities to the Korean market
- Sufficient working capital and human resources to undertake multi-year R&D collaboration and commercialize the results.
Delegation itinerary
The program in South Korea will take place between October 22-25, 2024.
Program Plans in South Korea (specific dates/times of program elements are subject to change)
The delegation program in South Korea will consist of a market briefing, site visit, pitching to Korean potential partners and technology investors, networking opportunities, and pre-arranged B2B meetings. To maximise the delegates' learning and partnering opportunities, the program will anchor with SEDEX 2024, the semiconductor expo organized by the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association.
Tuesday October 22
- Briefing session and market overview
- Site visit (* Sites to be selected and announced before the implementation of the program.)
Wednesday October 23 to Thursday April 24
- Canada Pavilion at SEDEX: Pre-arranged B2B meetings; Canada Semiconductor Seminar;
- Networking lunch (or reception) at the Pavilion or other location.
Friday October 25
- Canada Pavilion at SEDEX: Individual walk-through of SEDEX exhibition;
- Delegates own program including follow-up meetings;
- Wrap-up & feedback session
Regular exhibitors of SEDEX are Korean and international chip manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, material research companies and key players in the semiconductor supply chain, including:
Why South Korea?
South Korea is home to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and has been one of the largest and most important memory chip manufacturers in the global market. The country is poised to develop and nurture system integrated IC and more value-added chips to meet the global demand that is growing exponentially thanks to innovation and commercialization of artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other cutting-edge technologies. The PDA will target Korean multinational enterprises (MNEs), SMEs, venture capital firms, research centers and academia in the various semiconductor verticals.
Financial support to participate in the delegation
The Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP) may provide financial support to eligible Canadian SMEs participants for up to 50% of all eligible expenses (see application process below) that include but are not limited to the following:
- Economy class airfare
- Local transportation
- Accommodation
- Meals (per diems)
- Conference registration fees
Consult the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP) Applicant Guide for the complete list of eligible expenses. To access the CIIP Applicant Guide contact the CIIP team at innovation@international.gc.ca.
